THE PLACE

Salt with an address.

The municipal museum describes Troncalhada as a working sea-salt pan in the southern Aveiro saltworks area. It combines traditional production with interpretation of the marnotos’ craft. This record does not represent all Aveiro salt producers. [1] [2] [3]

THE METHOD

How the salt is made.

The museum explains that seawater enters from a Ria de Aveiro channel and moves through reservoir, evaporation and crystallisation ponds. Sun and wind concentrate the water; the marnotos carry out the seasonal salt harvest. Its production calendar describes the traditional cycle, not a guarantee of activity on a particular visit.
