METHOD & EDITORIAL PRINCIPLES

Every place
has a source.

A growing reference to saltmaking, starting at the sea.

What this directory covers

We begin with producers making culinary salt from seawater. This growing selection tests the approach; they are not a representative global census. This selection leans toward European and English-language sources. Future research will broaden its geography before adding inland brine, lake salt and mines.

How a profile is researched

We read the producer’s own accounts, describe the method in plain language and link the sources. Each profile names the place, explains the process, distinguishes products made there from other goods sold by the brand, and records visitor information when available.

“Operator-reported” means the business has published the information. It does not mean we inspected the farm, tested its salt or independently confirmed its claims. Where a detail is unresolved, we say so. Method categories are our groupings of the described steps; they are not producer certifications. Unlisted outside inputs have not been established, rather than confirmed absent. We do not reproduce claims of health benefits, superior minerals or environmental performance without appropriate evidence.

Maintaining a reference

We aim to revisit process descriptions annually and visitor information quarterly. Prices and schedules belong on the producer’s current website. A shop, a virtual tour and access to the working saltworks are different things.

Ownership and independence

This is an editorial project by Fully Equipped, the business behind Gaucho Provisions. Listings are unpaid and do not imply endorsement or affiliation. Our commercial connection is disclosed so readers can judge our work in context.

Photographs and illustrations

The opening photograph shows the actual salt ponds at Salinas de Janubio, Lanzarote. Janubio has photographs by H. Zell (2018, CC BY-SA 3.0) and MiljenkoSuljic (2023, CC BY-SA 4.0). The Netarts Bay landscape by Gary Halvorson, Oregon State Archives (2018, CC BY 4.0), illustrates the surrounding setting, not the Jacobsen facility. Its credit, original source, licence and resizing note appear beside it. Older photographs do not establish current conditions. We add producer images and logos only after reviewing suitable reuse terms or recording permission from the rights holder; a credit alone does not provide that permission.

Corrections

A dedicated corrections contact is being set up for this first public edition. We record corrections with their date and source. Please use each producer’s official website for current visitor information.
