Shark Bay Resources

Tidal seawater, solar ponds and a bulk salt harvest.

Useless Inlet and Useless Loop, Western Australia · Operator-reported profile

THE PLACE

Salt with an address.

Shark Bay Resources is the Shark Bay saltfield operated by Shark Bay Salt. Seawater enters evaporation ponds at Useless Inlet, and concentrated brine travels to crystallisation ponds at Useless Loop. This is a bulk salt operation, separate from the company’s Onslow saltfield. [1]

THE METHOD

How the salt is made.

The company describes solar concentration of seawater followed by crystallisation in ponds. Mobile harvesters collect the salt, which is hauled to a washing plant. It is washed with brine or seawater, stockpiled to drain and dry, and loaded for shipment. [2]

Process described by the operator; method categories are editorial groupings. Not independently inspected.
