Zeeuwsche Zoute

Eastern Scheldt seawater becomes salt flakes in Bruinisse, Zeeland.

Bruinisse, Zeeland · Operator-reported profile

THE PLACE

Salt with an address.

Zeeuwsche Zoute makes sea salt in Bruinisse on Schouwen-Duiveland, beside the Eastern Scheldt. The producer traces its beginnings to Christian Clerx’s experiments with local seawater in 2018. Today its saltworks combines heated production with a visitor centre where people can learn about the process, taste the salt and buy products. [1]

THE METHOD

How the salt is made.

The operator says it collects Eastern Scheldt water near Bruinisse at high tide, filters it and concentrates it by heating in a kettle. The brine moves to smaller heated open pans, where pyramid-shaped crystals form before sinking. Saltmakers scoop out the crystals and dry them in ovens, then package the salt or finish it by smoking or blending with ingredients such as seaweed and herbs. The producer describes wind-generated electricity for heating the pans; this is an operator statement, not an independently verified energy or environmental assessment. [2]
